Alpini and Bersaglieri Restore War Memorials Despite Draft Abolition

The draft is now abolished, but the War Sections, especially the Alpini, continue their social commitment.

By the end of March, work had been completed to make the access avenue to the Ossuary Chapel, which houses the remains of many fallen soldiers from the bloody Risorgimento battle of June 24, 1859, a bit more dignified; the avenue was practically destroyed by the tornado that struck that tragic Saturday, September 16, 2000.

After some time, the president of the Società San Martino e Solferino, Dr. Fausto Fondrieschi, requested help from the president of the Desenzano del Garda Veterans Section, Pasquali, to assist in restoring the destroyed avenue and monuments.

Section Interventions and Restoration Work

President Pasquali, in turn, reached out to Leonardo Lunari, president of the Sezione Bersaglieri di Desenzano del Garda, who promptly welcomed the request for help, engaging various sections of both Bersaglieri and Alpini.

The invitation was accepted by the Bersaglieri of the Desenzano Section and the Alpini of San Martino and Pozzolengo.

The work began on Saturday, November 11, and, except for a brief break during the Christmas and New Year holidays, continued until the end of March.

Today, thanks to the dedicated efforts of these feathered volunteers: Bersaglieri and Alpini, the access avenue to the Ossuary Chapel and the surrounding areas have regained a dignified appearance.

Reflections on the Abolition of the Draft

Perhaps those who had the brilliant idea to abolish the draft should be invited to see how former conscript soldiers operate and dedicate themselves, and to reflect on what will happen when the relentless law of time erases the sections of former conscripts.
