Desenzano’s Cultural and Sporting Events Amid Budget Cuts
A schedule of cultural, artistic, and sporting events spanning the entire tourist season, but which will inevitably be affected by the significant budget cuts imposed by the Administration. The Councillor for Sport and Tourism, Giuliano Garagna, seems to be preemptively addressing potential critics who will likely voice their concerns in the city council chamber or during other political debates. Two sponsors have come to the rescue: Cameo, the German confectionery giant, and Grana Padano, the Italian food colossus.
Folklore Festivals and Exhibition Spaces
Starting with folklore events. In addition to traditional appointments like the Festa dell’Ospite in Rivoltella and the Vino Festival of San Martino in August, there are notable events such as the Notte d’Incanto on August 11, the Art Exhibition in the old port area on June 23 and 24, and the regional selection of Miss Italia scheduled for August 18.
Throughout the summer, exhibition spaces will be available in the Civic Gallery of Palazzo Todeschini and Villa Brunati in Rivoltella: planned are solo and group exhibitions of painting, sculpture, and photography. Special attention is given to two events: the photographic exhibition “Italy 1900-2000” curated by the Alinari brothers from July 21 to September 23, and the exhibition “This Is How the Nineteenth Century Was” from May 5 to 13.
Social Initiatives and Cultural Itineraries
The Department of Social Services reports a new set of initiatives. On May 26, in Piazza Malvezzi, the conclusion of the “Adoption at a Distance” project started last December 3 will be celebrated, and on June 8, a theatrical show for children titled “Giotto, the Man Who Painted the Sky” will be held in the Cloister of S. Maria de Senioribus.
Further, the Merician itineraries, named after the patron saint of Desenzano, S. Angela Merici, will resume. Tomorrow, Sunday, April 29, these will be reoffered with a guided bike ride along the ten-kilometer route passing through locations associated with the saint: departure at 8:30 a.m. from via Castello, in front of her birthplace.
Sports Events
Moving on to sports, which in Desenzano are hosting numerous high-profile events. From May 4 to 6, the International Wheelchair Fencing Tournament; on May 5, a conference on natural nutrition for physical activities at the Tourism Palace; and on May 12 and 13, the “Multistars” at the “Tre Stelle” stadium, an event featuring top athletes in heptathlon and decathlon, now in its 14th edition, with scores counting for the IAAF World Championships.
Also at the Desenzano stadium, the final stage of the Provincial Mini-Volley Circuit is scheduled for June 10. Additionally, the Italian championships of combined events will be held on September 22 and 23, and the German Shepherd dog training World Championship will take place on May 26 and 27.
For sailing, numerous regattas organized by Fraglia Vela Desenzano are planned: in July, Optimists and the “Santarelli Days.” The traditional summer season presentation event at the “Piccola Vela” hotel was attended, among others, by Mayor Cino Anelli, president of Fraglia Vela Gigi Cabrini, the regional representative for Miss Italia Wilma Bombardelli, and then the general director of Brescia’s Azienda Ospedaliera, Lucio Mastromatteo, accompanied by the president of the Istituto del Radio, who promote a charity lyrical concert scheduled in Desenzano, as previously reported on the entertainment page.
