Lazise Honors Ottonian Heritage with Historical Reenactment
Otto II of Germany and the privilege of May 7, 983, granted to the Comunitatis Lacisiensis, are featured in the streets and squares of the walled town on the Veronese Riviera of Lake Garda, tomorrow and Sunday.
This is the historical reenactment of the Ottonian concession that comes back to life among the people to culturally and folkloristically commemorate the first free commune of Italy. Lazise and its people take pride in this tradition worldwide.
Words of pride and cultural heritage
“We cannot simply let our roots go unnoticed,” declares Roberto Campagnari, municipal councilor responsible for the Ottonian celebration and the driving force behind the event, “and this is why we intend to relive, even in a folkloric and street manner, the great historical event that granted Lazise its first freedoms.
Among these are the freedom to fish, to trade, to impose taxes, and the autonomous administrative management of the town. We are proud of all this and at the same time grateful to Ottone, who saw in Lazise a hardworking, peaceful community, in love with its lake and the wealth it has always provided to its people: fishing.”
