Lower Lake Civil Protection Receives New Off-Road Vehicle for Missions
The Civil Protection team of the lower lake and inland areas now has a new off-road vehicle, a Land Rover worth 60 million lira, purchased thanks to contributions from the Alpini fondo basso lago, the Municipality, and the Franke company.
The delivery of the vehicle took place yesterday morning at 10 a.m. at the Palleria, which hosts the volunteers. Civil and military authorities were present at the ceremony. After the blessing by the parish priest of Peschiera, Don Giovanni Guandalini, the floor was given to the mayor Umberto Chincarini: «It is not rhetoric to state that your work is invaluable, an example of humanity and solidarity».
Testimony and mission of Civil Protection
Great emotion was stirred by the first-hand account of Enrico Fasoli, team leader and victim of a work accident: the severing of tendons in a leg caused by losing control of a chainsaw he was using to cut some branches. Many months of therapy were necessary to regain mobility and return to his volunteer work.
The Civil Protection of the lower lake relies on 28 volunteers available 24 hours a day. Among the most significant interventions: in September 1997, aid to the earthquake victims in Umbria; in 1999, assistance to the Albanians in Vlorë and in Kosovo; in February 2000, flood emergency in France, and in October of the same year, flooding in Ivrea.
Activities and interventions
The volunteers have also been involved in searching for missing persons and providing assistance during sporting events. Several rescue calls have been received from boats in distress.
Finally, a mention of the friendly Terranova dogs on the Peschiera team, trained by instructor Lara Tosi: Teddy, 7 years old, handler Mirko Mariotto; Otto, 3 years old, handler Giovanna Borella; Blu, 2 years old, handler Andrea Gozzi; Ledy, 2 years old, handler Federico Carraro; Nuvola, 7 years old, handler Marco Ruffoni; Shira, 8 years old, handler Umberto Ferrari; and the very young mascot Fussi, a 5-month-old puppy who, according to the trainer, already shows great talent.
