Garda Safety and Navigation Conference Highlights Law Enforcement and Partnerships

The annual conference with ADAC Germany on navigation issues and safety took place. An interested and large audience filled the hall of the Hotel Continental di Sirmione.

Max Stich and Karl Rakerseder, respectively Vice President and Head of the Pleasure Craft Sector of ADAC, emphasized the importance of the qualified tourist offerings in Lake Garda for the German market, reaffirming the need for joint initiatives and actions to improve the overall image of the Garda area, similar to those undertaken by the Community.

In particular, Rakerseder detailed the safety system for navigators operating on the Bodensee, with specific reference to the visual signaling system for changing weather conditions.

Situation of surveillance and cooperation among law enforcement agencies

The President of Comunità del Garda, Giuseppe Mongiello, announced that discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Transport, the Regions of Lombardia and Veneto, and the Autonomous Province of Trento to reintroduce, even during the summer season, the Coast Guard patrol boat on Lake Garda waters.

However, the surveillance will be supported by other law enforcement agencies, including Vigili del Fuoco (Firefighters), Guardia di Finanza (Financial Guard), Polizia di Stato (State Police), and the Arma dei Carabinieri (Carabinieri Corps), all of which have increased their equipment and personnel.

The role of sailing clubs and safety regulations

Sailing and nautical clubs, together with volunteer organizations, play a vital role in safeguarding the safety of those using the lake’s waters.

It is also reaffirmed that the rules to be followed by all who navigate Lake Garda are those established by the interregional law in force since 1984. Therefore, navigators’ safety, closely linked to that of swimmers, depends on respecting speed limits, protecting the shoreline, and adhering to regulations regarding onboard equipment and instrumentation.

The main issues concerning ongoing developments in port management and maritime concession regulations were also addressed.

Guests’ responses and future initiatives

German guests reiterated their appreciation for the efforts of Italian law enforcement agencies operating on the lake to protect the safety of boaters.

It was assured that, in the spirit of the collaboration established over the years thanks to Comunità del Garda, ADAC will inform its over 14 million members.

Attendees highlighted the importance of information as a prevention tool and invited to strengthen awareness campaigns on land that encourage greater attention to safety regulations, including practical tips.

Interventions on bathing safety and beach safety measures

Finally, the safety of swimming was emphasized as an urgent initiative to be undertaken by Garda authorities through the deployment of professional lifeguards on beaches.
