Oil Spill Response at Garda Lake Following Ferrari Truck Leak
The firefighters were working throughout yesterday in the waters in front of the power plant, attempting to pump out a large oil spill that had appeared on the water’s surface already on Wednesday afternoon.
Likely leaked from the engine of the Ferrari company’s truck, which fell into Garda Lake on May 10th during the first ferry trip to Limone on the Brenner ferry, the oily substance covered a wide area of the lake, and containing it proved to be a very difficult task. Wind, waves, and the constant passing of boats indeed hampered the efforts of the firefighters.
Thus, besides trying to collect the oil, the volunteer firefighters from Riva also had to focus on containing the front of the spill, which was at real risk of spreading uncontrollably.
Using floating barriers, they attempted to push the spill toward the port of Piazza Catena, where the lake was calmer and less crowded, in order to facilitate pumping it out.
