Fermi High School in Salò Launches Social Sciences Diploma Course
After Scientific, Classic, and Linguistic streams, the «Fermi» High School in Salò is expanding its offering. Starting in September, a diploma course in Social Sciences will be launched.
New course and expansion of the educational offerings
“The law on autonomy has not been taken as a dead letter— explains Principal Liliana Aimo. Prompted by the teachers’ staff and the School Council, we saw an opportunity for both quantitative and qualitative expansion by creating the High School of Social Sciences. This highlights not only the school’s vitality but also its multifaceted character and the belief that diversifying educational orientations is the only response to the evolving cultural needs of the territory.
With the Classic and Linguistic streams, Brocca, the Fermi has grown to double its number of enrollments. So much so that, last summer, the number of graduates was higher (for the first time) than that of the Battisti Technical Institute.
“Further impetus for choosing— adds Principal Aimo—came from the commitment made by the provincial administration to build the new single campus, which will undoubtedly better meet the logistical needs of the institute.” The new site will be on the hill above Campoverde, behind the Carabinieri barracks.
Presence and features of the Social Sciences course in Italy
In Italy, Social Sciences have been present for a couple of years in high schools (for example in Ferrara at «Manzoni»). On a trial basis, it is found in various locations. The closest for Garda residents is the «Veronica Gambara» in Brescia.
“Far from being a revised and corrected remake of the old Magistral course— continues the principal—, this course focuses on new knowledge, introducing disciplines such as Sociology and Psychology. It aligns with European and non-European school systems that have identified these subjects as the cognitive foundation of current and future knowledge.
Moreover, it includes the study of two community languages, English and German, on an absolutely equal footing.
Structure and objectives of the new program
Three main areas. The Equivalence area offers the opportunity for solid foundational cultural training aimed at the students’ future commitments, paralleling the first two years of most high schools, thus ensuring the possibility of reorientation.
This area includes canonical subjects such as Italian, English, Mathematics, Earth Sciences, History, etc., as well as other disciplines like Economics and Multimedia Languages, which are useful in acquiring the skills required for the third millennium.
The Specialization area enriches basic training with Social Sciences and a second foreign language (German). The Integration area develops courses tailored to the needs of the territory, enhances curricular disciplines, or introduces new ones.
“The fundamental goal— concludes Aimo, daughter of one of the legendary professors of Salò—is to provide general skills for access to all university courses, as well as more specific skills necessary for entering the workforce.”
