Desenzano Hospital Introduces Water Birth and Birthing Pool Facility
Desenzano expectant mothers can now give birth in water. Soon, as announced by the head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, Pasquale Pignatelli, the Monte Croce hospital will also have a birthing pool, enabling water birth, or the so-called “gentle birth,” practiced successfully for many years at the Gavardo hospital, the second referral center of the company.
Details about the whirlpool and the delivery room
The tub, made of fiberglass, measures one meter seventy centimeters long, one meter twenty centimeters wide, and seventy-four centimeters high. It will be placed in the center of the delivery room to facilitate easier access for the midwife and allow the partner to be beside the mother-to-be to assist her, without hindering the staff’s work.
Inside this mini-pool, which will be filled with water at the appropriate temperature, the laboring woman will be able to move freely, stretch her legs, lean on the edge, kneel, and ultimately give birth to her child. The tub also contains accessories such as a hydro-massage, a gel-filled cushion, a handheld shower; additionally, there is a seat and other comfortable materials.
The gentle birth and other initiatives
Thus, the gentle birth makes its debut at the Garda hospital, in a department that also offers painless labor, highly appreciated by women. “For a laboring woman,” explains Pignatelli, “it means having an alternative to traditional childbirth that shortens the labor, which almost always causes anxiety for the expectant mother, and benefits from experiencing contractions with less intensity.”
Appearing satisfied, the general director Angelo Foschini also comments. “Our departments” are gradually upgrading their equipment and improving services for users; the gentle birth is certainly another milestone achieved, and more will follow: a continuous effort by our staff to reach excellence levels in performance, which should be appreciated.”
Renovation efforts and comments on the current situation
However, there are other upcoming changes at the “Monte Croce” maternity ward. Work has recently begun on renovating and modernizing the department. These renovations mainly concern the Nursery and once completed, they will allow mothers to access freely and at any time to care for their babies.
“Unavoidably,” warns Pignatelli, “some inconveniences such as reduced bed availability may occur, but they certainly will not interrupt the continuity of service and care for our patients, with the professional competence that has always distinguished our staff.”
The work is expected to conclude shortly, and so far, no issues have been reported for mothers and their babies. Despite chronic staff shortages, the department continues to provide all the necessary care.
Parliamentary initiatives and future assessments
Meanwhile, yesterday, Chiara Moroni, a newly elected MP from Nuovo Psi, visited the Desenzano hospital and met with General Director Foschini. The fresh Secretary of the Social Affairs and Health Committee of the Chamber gathered a series of insights to evaluate the future of the Roè Volciano hospital and concluded: “Desenzano functions well, with good departments and services, and should be further supported; however, Gavardo Hospital, which serves a large catchment area, also needs to be strengthened.”
