Church of S. Martino in Moniga Suffers Repeated Vandalism and Theft
The parish of S. Martino in Moniga has repeatedly been the target of disgraceful acts of vandalism, carried out by the same unknown individuals who, breaking into the church for purposes far from sacred, end up stealing and damaging sacred objects and furnishings. For the church, led by Father Giovanni Bertaiola, there has been no respite. The latest incident occurred just days ago, and it is not easy to determine exactly when it happened, as the priest only casually discovered the disappearance of the object in question. We are referring to a rather serious theft: unknown persons allegedly entered the church to seize a precious liturgical symbol.
The theft of the altar cross
The stolen item is, in fact, the altar cross, used in processions. It is a creation of great value, made in the 18th century. The cross is double-sided and about fifty centimeters long. Father Giovanni Bertaiola expressed great regret upon discovering the absence of this object, which is literally venerated during the most solemn ceremonies.
The priest also laments the theft because the cross had undergone restoration not long ago. The sacred artifact depicts, on one side, the crucified Christ in gold with the four evangelists on the sides. On the other side, there is an image of a Madonna in silver with four cherubs. The stele features a sphere at the base supported by a metal stand.
Given the materials used, it was easy for thieves to deduce the monetary value of the object and steal it, causing significant harm to the entire religious community, which is strongly devoted to these ancient symbols of Catholicism.
The disappearance of the valuable and ancient cross was reported to the Manerba Carabinieri station, who are now investigating to identify the perpetrators, checking for possible links to previous thefts.
Other thefts in the church
In addition to the acts of vandalism against the church, the series of thefts over a short period continues. A few months ago, two ancient wooden candelabras were stolen. But that’s not all.
On another occasion, two wrought iron candle holders were stolen. The loot included offerings and the related container present in one of the nave areas.
