Salò Hosts Historical Garda Conference and Cultural Exhibition

The National Castle Days and the conference in Lonato (discussed alongside) will be preceded by a rich preview of notable historical significance. Today and tomorrow, the Comune di Salò’s Department of Culture hosts two prominent events, organized in collaboration with the Associazione storico-archeologica della Riviera del Garda bresciano, presided over by Mirelia Scudellari.

Conference on the history of Garda and the 20th century

Starting at 9 a.m., in the council chamber, a conference titled «Lake Garda and 20th Century History» will take place, during which the political events and cultural developments of the century in the Benaco region will be discussed. After greetings from the mayor, avv. Giampiero Cipani, the seminar will feature an address by Prof. Carlo Simoni on «From macrohistory to microhistory».

Following will be Prof. Gianfranco Porta speaking on «The political and military events of the 20th century»; Prof. Domenico Fava on «The Great War at the border with Ledro Valley»; and Prof. Francesco Germinario on «The Italian Social Republic: Salò as the capital of Italy».

After lunch, at 3 p.m., Prof. Mauro Grazioli will present on «Tourism on Garda at the beginning of the 20th century», followed by Professors Pier Giuseppe Pasini («Tourism at the end of the 19th century»), Titus Heydenreich («Dream, destination, metaphor: poets on the lake»), Gian Paolo Treccani («Contemporary architectural itineraries»), Maurizio Pegrari («Garda, Europe’s neighborhood»). The event is expected to conclude around 6 p.m.

Exhibition and awards

For this initiative, the Comune di Salò has associated the Rassegna del libro gardesano. On this occasion, within the exhibition set up in the Sala dei Provveditori, several publications, engravings, and ancient prints belonging to the private archive «Galeazzi» will be displayed, along with a precious 15th-century Gregorian Gradual, owned by the Ateneo.

It will also be an opportunity to promote the most comprehensive bookstore on the lake, the municipal bookshop managed by Luigi Gozza. The exhibition will remain open until October 7, with hours from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

During the opening ceremony of the exhibition, tomorrow at 9 a.m., awards (in books) will be presented to middle and high school students who participated in the contest organized by the Associazione storico-archeologica della Riviera, focused on research related to the local territory. The first prize will be offered by the comune, the second by Banco di Brescia, and the third by Asar.

The Ateneo will also award an additional recognition to the best thesis from each high school.
