Castiglione’s Growing Pains: Security, Traffic, and Justice Challenges
The municipality is experiencing a period of economic expansion, which is associated with a significant population growth. These positive trends, however, are leading to an increase in social issues.
Safety, roads, and justice are the issues to which the administration gives priority attention. As of August 31, 2001, Castiglione counted 18,505 inhabitants.
The percentage of foreign residents is high: 6.8 percent of the population. The immigration factor makes the Municipality a melting pot of cultures.
This is evidenced by the 8 religious communities that coexist alongside the Catholic community. However, the growing complexity of social realities brings with it some inevitable collateral problems.
Security Problems
This emerges from the analysis conducted by Mayor Arturo Sigurtà, an analysis also supported by Giulio Freddi, president of the industrialists, who shares the image of Castiglione painted by the first citizen.
In 2000, 12 robberies, 359 burglaries, and 15 scams were recorded. This situation has prompted the administration to raise concerns about the shortage of staff in the local law enforcement agencies.
«While we acknowledge the particular efforts of the carabinieri on duty — comments Freddi — we must also reiterate the need to equip our municipality with a police station. Economic development and its geographical position at an important crossroads make Castiglione an attractive location for microcriminality.
Traffic and Road Issues
Another problem concerns traffic management. Difficulties are encountered when entering the town from Brescia via the Aloisian road.
There is a need to install access ramps on the bypass and the necessary exit to enable entry into the municipality.
«The issue is straightforward — emphasizes Freddi —. The problem exists, and the Province of Mantova must take responsibility for it.
It is unthinkable, according to the president of the industrialists, to see Castiglione cut off from an important exit leading to the neighboring province.
Justice Issues and Future Perspectives
The discussion concludes with the issue of justice. According to the head of the local division of the Tribunal, the staffing levels are insufficient and jeopardize the functionality of that section, given the workload arising from its jurisdiction over 20 municipalities.
Freddi also raises another concern related to the upcoming election cycle. «We are approaching the renewal of the administration — he explains —. Therefore, we can anticipate heightened political tensions.»
