Castiglione Roads Crisis: Traffic, Safety, and Infrastructure Challenges

The traffic coming from Brescia is not the only aspect of road safety that concerns the residents of Castiglione. Certainly, the problem exists: the interchange ramps built are awkward, far from the town center, and the signage is not adequate to correctly guide travelers.

Alongside those who believe that the situation can be resolved with proper railway connections, there are others who think that road traffic issues should be addressed within a broader roadway context. Finally, some believe the real emergency lies elsewhere: “Yes, there are some problems with the entry traffic from Brescia, but I wouldn’t make a crisis out of it. Most of the inconveniences can be resolved through better regulation of what already exists,” states Angelo Beschi, manager of Sterilgarda.

“Better directing heavy traffic and regular road use. The true urgency is the Goitese: traffic moves slowly and reaching Mantova becomes increasingly difficult.” Giancarlo Buccella, a Upa officer, while acknowledging that the entry into Castiglione from Brescia is not ideal, highlights other aspects: “Despite the bypass, most traffic still passes through the center.”

But the real issue is special transports, which cannot use certain routes because the bridges are too low: they need to go to Solferino and, for S. Cassiano, reach the Medole intersection to re-enter the Goitese, where heavy traffic has reached alarming levels.” According to Engineer Bicelli of Golden Lady: “The greatest problems stem from the intersection between the Goitese, via Tasso, and via Gnutti, which leads towards the Desenzano motorway exit.”

Delays, and unfortunately accidents, are very frequent. The situation on the Goitese is already collapsing, so much so that we have decided to outsource secretarial services for Mantova: nowadays, even delivering a document can take up an entire morning.” Lastly, merchants consider the historic center the most urgent problem: “Castiglione has a particular structure,” notes Gaela Brena of the Unione del Commercio.

“It is poorly suited to withstand the traffic flowing into it. Greater attention should be given to parking facilities to improve the livability of the center.”
