Navigarda Ferries Out of Service Due to Low Water Levels at Lake Garda

The large ferries of Navigarda, which allowed crossing the picturesque lakeshore with cars onboard, sailing from Desenzano and returning to Riva, are currently out of service.

The reason for the suspension is the water level being too low. At the dock, the ferry remained too close to the water’s surface, and the vehicle decks on the ship were touching the gangway because of the steep decline.

Still active crossings and causes of water level decline

However, the connections between Torri del Benaco and Maderno remain operational, where the water level is higher and does not pose issues for vehicles.

The cause of the significant water level drop is uncertain: the Navigarda management suspects the intense heat, but the possibility of water withdrawals for agricultural purposes downstream of the lake, from the Mincio near Peschiera, is not ruled out, which could have contributed to lowering the lake’s level too much.
