Road Maintenance on Gardesana: Closure, Work Schedule & Impact

Maintenance works on the “Gardesana” state road

Starting tomorrow morning, October 8th, as announced in recent days, there will be a road closure on the “Gardesana” state road between Gargnano and Riva. The most significant works are scheduled at the height of Forbisicle (at kilometer 93), near the homonymous hotel, located just south of the long tunnel that runs behind Campione.

The operations will not be brief, and the ordinance issued by Anas in Milan (No. 158 of October 4th) foresees completion before Christmas, by December 22nd, a year after the landslide that affected the 45 bis from Monte Rocchetta, south of Riva.

Timetables and transit modes

The closure hours of the state road from tomorrow and for two and a half months are as follows: from 7:15 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.; from 8:15 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.; from 9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.; from 10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Therefore, work interruptions are scheduled, allowing traffic to pass until 2:00 p.m. In the afternoon, traffic is prohibited from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.; from 3:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; from 4:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and from 5:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Work will also proceed on Saturday mornings.

Free passage will be granted instead on Saturday afternoons and public holidays.

Works by the contracted company

The contracted company is Ics Crisafulli Strade of Milan, which will carry out interventions for about twenty days also near Limone, close to the Pergola hotel (at kilometer 103.300), to complete the arrangement of four drainage channels from which several cubic meters of stones and dirt fell during the last summer.

Specifically, works are planned between the Panorama hotel and Reamòl, thus to the north of the Panorama and near the Segala lemon greenhouse.

Works related to the new tunnel in Riva

Next week, other significant projects are expected to be announced, particularly those related to the completion of the new tunnel south of Riva, the record-breaking gallery inaugurated on July 7 by the President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

The company will likely begin operations around mid-November, and information on traffic impact should be available within a few days.

Network securing works

Regarding the works starting tomorrow, these involve securing meshes that must be anchored to the rocky wall using cables. Essentially, this is the completion of a project that was initiated in spring and suspended in July for safety reasons of the ridge.

Anchors for the cables holding the nets, covering approximately 10,000 square meters of mountain, need to be installed in the ground. The drill holes, about one and a half meters deep, will number approximately 1200-1300—roughly one every 9 square meters.
