Major Road Closure in Occidentale Between Riva and Limone for One Month
The second phase of work on the Occidentale between Riva and Limone will involve a month of total traffic closure. The decision was made in the province following adjustments to the definitive project of the work: the two connecting galleries between the tunnel and the old road suspended on the lake, initially planned, were canceled. Engineer De Col has opted to build two “chambers” that, in the unfortunate event of accidents, will allow lane exchange and the transit of rescue vehicles.
Basically, these are two widenings, each about sixty meters long and fifteen meters wide. Excavating them requires explosives, which rules out any traffic during work. The closure is scheduled for one month, likely between November 15 and mid-December.
Agreement and Temporary Connections
The agreement, at least in principle, has been reached between the province, the municipalities of Riva and Limone, and Navigarda. Director Engineer Coppola is considering using a fast catamaran — with one hundred seats — to connect commuters, especially students.
No ferry service is expected to operate. The period was chosen considering the near-total absence of tourism, at least until the end-of-year holidays.
