Desenzano Water Safe Despite Algae Concerns, Say Officials

“I would like to reassure the people of Desenzano once and for all about the rumors surrounding toxic algae and the quality of drinking water: there is no alarm.” Mayor Cino Anelli emphasizes a recommendation, which is to not be overwhelmed by excessive worry, especially since public opinion is already under pressure due to bioterrorism concerns.

The blooming algae observed these weeks all over the lake, as is well known, contain toxins that could be potentially dangerous if their concentrations become high. It is therefore necessary to measure the number of cells contained in one liter of water. The parameters, as reported to Bresciaoggi by the director of the Distretto sanitario del Garda, dottor Angelo Benedetti, have never been exceeded, nor even approached.

In fact, the concentration has been significantly below the set thresholds: this is confirmed by the results of the numerous analyses carried out by health technicians in recent days. The precautionary measures (such as the suspension of the old lake intake in Desenzano) implemented earlier this week should be viewed, as Mayor Anelli and assessore Benedetti state, as part of a “meticulous effort because weather conditions could have favored the emergence of problems.”

Interventions and monitoring

Furthermore, in recent days, two wind and water storms likely altered the algae concentrations, reducing the risk of a dangerous situation. “The lake pump — resumes the mayor — has been shut down. I want to reassure the population because in 15 days a new pump will be activated, ensuring an even greater flow of water.”

Anyway, I have contacted the relevant offices, and I was told there have been no inconveniences for citizens.” Benedetti, on the other hand, emphasizes that “the situation is constantly monitored, and the precautions taken were solely aimed at providing maximum reassurance to the population.” Meanwhile, monitoring has continued in recent days, especially considering the higher-than-normal October temperatures.

The results of the sample analyses sent to laboratories will be announced shortly. No concerns are expected for Sirmione, which has increased the filtration at its lake intake.
