Baldo Mountain’s Unique Climate Supports Diverse Mushroom Species
“Baldo is a unique mountain because it encompasses all climate zones, from the Mediterranean to the Arctic, and this is why, drought aside, mushrooms of all species grow here,” says Paolo Cugildi, president of the mycological group Orto d’Europa Francesco Calzolari in Caprino.
“More than a thousand people have participated in basic mycology courses, botanical meetings, and educational outings organized annually by the association.” In the coming days, two more sessions will begin in collaboration with the Comunità Montana del Baldo.
Upcoming meetings and activities
The first started last evening at the group’s headquarters in Pazzon. The second begins tonight and will continue every Tuesday at 9 pm, in the council chamber of Rivalta.
Baldo is a mountain highly frequented by mushroom foragers. To date, the Comunità Montana and local municipalities have issued approximately 1,600 permits for mushroom picking.
“Most of these are held by residents within the Comunità Montana, but many come from outside the province or region, especially Mantova and Brescia,” explain the officials of the organization.
The majority are between 26 and 65 years old. Followed by those over 65, and a few young people aged 14 to 25.
