Garda Area Scams: Fraudsters Impersonate Authorities via Phone

They impersonate Carabinieri when making phone calls to hoteliers, shop owners, artisans, and restaurants in the Middle and Upper Garda areas, offering subscriptions to military magazines.

These are not military personnel, but fraudsters who, from time to time, claim to be part of financial authorities, the police, firefighters, or the Mayor’s office.

How to recognize scams

They often propose subscriptions to nonexistent magazines or magazines that have nothing to do with law enforcement.

Therefore, be cautious and immediately notify the genuine Carabinieri — just dial 112 — as soon as you suspect you have been targeted by someone who,

asks for money, then disappears.
