Saint Daniele Comboni Lake Garda: Limone Where the Story Begins
by Domenico Fava
Limone, Where the Story Begins
At the beginning of the 19th century, Limone was a small isolated village on Lake Garda, with rustic houses and steep alleys clinging to the rock face, accessible almost exclusively by water.
Numerous descriptions by writers and poets exist: following Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s famous passage on September 13, 1786, the French military map of the Army of the Grisons (1800–1801) documented the steep communications of the territory.
The local economy relied on lemon gardens—the famous lemon houses (limonaie)—and olive groves. The dialect vocabulary of the time preserved ancient local terms such as Cruṡète (small mountain crosses) and Teṡöl (small terraced plots).
It was in this humble and isolated setting that Saint Daniele Comboni Lake Garda was born on March 15, 1831, the fourth child of Luigi Comboni and Domenica Pace. Out of eight children, Daniele was the only one to survive infancy, as seven of his brothers and sisters died at an early age.
Faced with extreme poverty and tragic family losses, his parents decided to send young Daniele to Verona to study at Don Nicola Mazza’s institute. There, his missionary vocation blossomed, destined to transform the history of Africa and the Catholic Church.
