Garda Community Launches Action Plan to Curb Rapid Spread of Silt Fish

The Garda Community has launched an interregional action plan to control the rapidly expanding invasive catfish species in Lake Garda, driven by the sharp increase in siluro fish populations. Led by President Sen. Mariastella Gelmini and Vice President Filippo Gavazzoni, the initiative follows a proposal submitted in February 2024, addressing concerns dating back to the late 1980s.

Measures include supporting spearfishers for monitoring and removal, promoting selective fishing methods, and establishing an economic supply chain for the catch. The community emphasizes the need for immediate, coordinated responses, with Gavazzoni highlighting upcoming regulations on boat hull and engine sanitation to prevent further spread.
