Lombardy Proposes Motion Supporting Firefighters and Healthcare Initiatives
A regional motion has been filed in Lombardy urging the regional government to advocate for health screening programs and epidemiological studies focused on the firefighting personnel, both permanent and volunteer. The proposal, presented after an official visit to Brescia’s fire station, will be discussed and voted on at the upcoming Regional Council session.
The initiative stems from discussions with local Fire Chief Luigi Diaferio and union representative Michele Prandi, citing the 2022 IARC classification that designates firefighters’ occupational exposure as carcinogenic (Group 1). It calls on Lombardy to push the national government to fund and promote research on work-related health risks, including cohort studies, health surveillance, and cancer prevention programs for firefighters.
