Castelnuovo del Garda Commemorates 178 Years Since the April 11, 1848 Massacre

Castelnuovo del Garda will commemorate the 178th anniversary of the April 11, 1848, massacre with a ceremony on Sunday, April 12. The event includes a flag-raising at 8:30 a.m. in Piazza della Libertà, a mass at 9:30 a.m. in the parish church, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the Monument to the Martyrs, featuring local officials and the mayor, Davide Sandrini.

The memorial honors the Battle of April 11, 1848, when around 400 Lombard volunteers faced approximately 3,000 Austrian soldiers supported by artillery and cavalry. After three hours of fighting, the volunteers retreated, and Austrian forces led by Prince Thurn und Taxis looted and burned the village.
