Lombardy Bolsters Cancer Research With Secured Funding and Strategic Alliances
The Airc Foundation promoted a meeting on Friday, May 22, at Palazzo Lombardia titled “A new pact for research: building together the future of cancer research,” with speeches by President Attilio Fontana and Welfare Councillor Guido Bertolaso. Fontana stressed the need to strengthen a stable alliance among research, health, institutions, universities, IRCCS, foundations, businesses and civil society to accelerate the transfer of innovation to patients and to support prevention, early diagnosis and quality of care, citing the Institute of Molecular Oncology as an example of integrated scientific infrastructure in Lombardy’s oncology research ecosystem.
Bertolaso noted the region hosts 19 IRCCS among public and private institutions and, citing AIFA data, confirmed Lombardy accounts for over 50% of Italy’s clinical drug trials, with an economic impact of almost €2 billion in added value and about 17,000 jobs. The Region has allocated €20 million from the regional health fund for biomedical research, plus 15 PNRR projects totaling about €14 million and 10 projects funded by the Ministry of Health. Andrea Sironi, president of Airc Foundation, reported that the “5 per mille” data shows more than 1.8 million choices in favor of Airc for a total contribution exceeding €82 million.
