Cuarteto El Gato Pays Tribute to Astor Piazzolla at Villa di Gargnano
The Cuarteto El Gato will perform “Astor Piazzolla – Il rivoluzionario del tango” on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 9:15 p.m. in Piazza Villa, Villa di Gargnano, as the 15th event of the 14th edition of the Suoni e Sapori del Garda festival. Admission is free.
The quartet includes Serafino Tedesi (violin), Andrea Coruzzi (bandoneón), Marcello Salcuni (guitar) and Alberto Lo Gatto (double bass). They will play selected works by Argentine composer and bandoneón player Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992), widely regarded as the main driving force behind nuevo tango, whose innovations expanded the genre through dialogue with jazz, improvisation and contemporary classical music. Piazzolla faced resistance from tango traditionalists early on, but his music later became a worldwide reference point; during his career he collaborated with artists such as Amelita Baltar, Lalo Schifrin and Gerry Mulligan, and in Italy worked with performers including Mina, Milva, Tullio De Piscopo and Pino Presti.
