Garda Water Levels Under Control, Community Says Situation Is Unusual but Not Alarming

Water levels in Lake Garda are staying just below 70 cm above the Peschiera hydrometric zero, with the latest reading on August 4 at 11 a.m. showing 66.3 cm and a reservoir fill rate of 50.7%, according to laghi.net. The Garda Community said the situation is not yet alarming, but remains under continuous alert and monitoring amid unusually low rainfall and extreme air and water temperatures.

The Garda Community is coordinating with AIPO and the Mincio Consortium to manage a condition described as without similar precedents in recent decades. Compared with other pre-Alpine lakes in the same update, Garda’s fill is higher than the Maggiore (6%), Como (5.3%), Iseo (5.7%) and Idro (4.8%). A chart from the same source shows a decline from above 72 cm earlier in the period to the current 66.3 cm.

Priority is to safeguard all legitimate water uses at least until next Friday, while applying the “principle of proportionality,” meaning users may need to accept limits beyond normal legal and regulatory allowances. The Community said coordination with downstream users and ongoing dialogue with AIPO and the Mincio Consortium are central to achieving the best possible outcome for protecting the lake’s water resource.
