Garda Water Levels Drop: Over a Centimeter Lost in a Day

Lake Garda water levels continue to fall, with the lake losing more than 1 cm of water per day in August. On 16 August at 15:00, the level stood at +52.8 cm above the hydrometric zero at Peschiera del Garda, down from +72 earlier in the month. In less than three weeks, about 74 million cubic meters have been lost, bringing the reservoir to 41% of capacity, while inflows into the Sarca at its mouth have dropped to 12 cubic meters per second.

AIPo, the Mincio Consortium and the Garda Community are aiming to keep the lake at least 40 cm above hydrometric zero to avoid potential problems for municipal drinking-water supply and access to ports. To support that threshold, outflows from the Salionze dam—currently 58 cubic meters per second—will be further reduced, with a planned diversion of 28 cubic meters per second. While multiple uses are still operating regularly, the ongoing dry conditions remain critical, and some municipalities in the Brescia area have limited water use to essential needs.
