Enigmatic Tablet Unearthed at Lucone

An intact tablet was discovered during excavations at the Lucone site in Polpenazze, in the Garda area. The find was recovered from stratigraphic layer US 1015, rich in charcoal, during the 2026 archaeological campaign coordinated by Mavs of Gavardo and led by Marco Baioni. It is the third tablet recovered at site D and the 21st tablet found overall in the Lucone plain.

Bronze Age tablets are typically made of clay and decorated with incised lines and impressions, but their purpose remains unclear. Researchers say they could have served as calendars, tools linked to economic activities and metalworking, or ritual objects. The campaign also includes work on wooden structures from an ancient pile-dwelling settlement used over 4,000 years ago, and is scheduled to continue until September 4.
