Drivers and motorcyclists exploring the rugged mountain hinterland above western Lake Garda must plan for travel delays as the SP 9 Gargnano-Valvestino Road introduces alternating one-way traffic, a strict overtaking ban, and a mandatory 40 km/h speed limit under official provincial decree.
The measures were enacted through Ordinance No. 3450 issued on September 23, 2026, by the Road Sector of the Province of Brescia. The regulations affect two separate stretches of Provincial Road SP 9 (“Gargnano – Valvestino – Magasa”): from kilometre 15+520 to kilometre 15+750, and from kilometre 17+430 to kilometre 17+600, spanning the municipal borders of Gargnano and Valvestino.
Structural Engineering Across Complex Mountain Orography
The road restrictions are part of an ongoing infrastructure safety programme addressing the fragile geological slopes of the Parco Alto Garda Bresciano. The canyon roads climbing from the Benaco basin towards the Valvestino reservoir pass through sheer limestone walls, requiring specialised slope anchorage, rockfall mesh maintenance, and retaining wall reinforcement.
Traffic is managed on-site by temporary traffic light signals or manual marshalling during active construction hours. Overtaking is prohibited along the entire construction envelope to prevent head-on collisions on narrow mountain bends.
A Prime Touring Route for Cyclists and Motorcyclists
The SP 9 route represents one of the most celebrated panoramic touring roads in northern Italy. Departing from the historic lakeside harbour of Gargnano, the road winds uphill past traditional olive groves and stone hamlets before tracing the fjord-like shoreline of Lake Valvestino, renowned for its submerged bridge and turquoise waters.
Further up the valley, the route provides access to the historical Austro-Hungarian thatched-roof hay barns of Cima Rest in Magasa, before descending towards Lake Idro and the Valle Sabbia. Travelers embarking on autumn weekend tours are encouraged to allow extra travel time and exercise caution around heavy maintenance machinery.
