Caserma La Rocca in Peschiera del Garda opens its monumental restoration site to the public on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2026 for European Heritage Days, offering guided tours through centuries of military engineering inside the UNESCO-listed fortress.
Organized by the Municipality of Peschiera del Garda in close partnership with the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Verona, the initiative grants extraordinary access to the historic barracks complex located in Piazza Ferdinando di Savoia. Aligned with the national GEP theme—protecting, renewing, and reinventing cultural heritage—the open-site tours showcase ongoing structural restorations funded by regional investment to convert the sprawling complex into Peschiera’s future civic museum.
From Medieval Scaliger Fortress to Venetian Bastioned Ramparts
The complex of Caserma La Rocca encapsulates over two millennia of military stratigraphy at the strategic southern outlet where Lake Garda discharges into the Mincio River. Within the inner stronghold known as the Rocchetta, restoration architects have stabilized structural remains of the medieval castle built by the Della Scala lords of Verona, which once connected directly with the Scaliger Castle in Sirmione across the lower lake.
During the sixteenth century, the Republic of Venice absorbed the medieval core into a formidable pentagonal fortress surrounded by water-filled moats, establishing Peschiera as an anchor of its mainland defenses. This remarkable urban fortification earned international recognition in 2017, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the transnational serial property Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries.
Habsburg Military Bakery and 19th-Century Engineering
Following the Napoleonic interlude, the Austrian Empire re-engineered Caserma La Rocca into a central logistical pillar of the famous Quadrilatero defensive network alongside Mantua, Verona, and Legnago. Under Habsburg administration, the building housed the imperial military bakery (provianda), equipped with four industrial-scale masonry ovens producing approximately 3,000 loaves of bread each day to supply soldiers stationed throughout the lake garrison.
In 1835, Austrian military engineers constructed an underground icehouse (ghiacciaia) with a storage capacity exceeding 80,000 kilograms of ice, utilized both for food preservation and for treating wounded soldiers in the military hospital. During World War I, the Italian Army continued using the facility for ration distribution to front-line battalions, a legacy echoed nearby at the battlefield memorial of San Martino della Battaglia.
Guided Tour Itinerary and Visitor Information
Free guided tours lasting forty-five minutes are scheduled across the weekend. Morning sessions run from 9:30 to 12:30 (departures at 9:30, 10:15, 11:00, and 11:45), followed by Saturday afternoon departures from 16:30 to 19:30 (16:30, 17:15, 18:00, and 18:45), and Sunday morning sessions.
Each tour group is strictly limited to thirty participants. The assembly point is situated in Piazza Ferdinando di Savoia adjacent to the excavated Roman remains of Arilica and the parish church of San Martino.
