The Garda Cycle Path (Ciclovia del Garda) will cross the section between Gardone Riviera and Limone sul Garda by boat: the project by Navigazione Laghi for two vessels dedicated to transporting bicycles is “almost defined and is being shared with the Region,” explained General Director Alberto Chiovelli. It will take approximately twenty-four months to build them.
Why the onshore cycle path will not be built
The decision dates back to December 15, 2025, when the Lombardy Regional Council, upon the proposal of the Infrastructure Councilor Claudia Maria Terzi, decided against building the onshore stretch between Gardone Riviera and Limone due to technical and hydrogeological criticalities along the Gardesana Occidentale road, which features rock faces with a high risk of landslides. Instead, the Region approved an agreement with the Province of Brescia and Navigazione Laghi for a lake connection.
Terzi presented the solution as an intermodal option that leaves the cycling ring around the lake intact, protecting the territory and those who travel it by bike or on foot.
What the project involves
The agreement entrusts Navigazione Laghi with the design of naval units intended for bicycles and passengers, waiting, boarding, and alighting areas, and spaces for bicycle storage. The service will have a regular schedule independent of existing lines. For now, two boats are planned.
Timing linked to funding
The estimated twenty-four months concern the construction of the boats; the launch of the service will depend on the procurement of funds, expected from the Region and the Ministry of Transport. Meanwhile, on the Trentino side, the stretch between Riva del Garda and the border with Limone requires over two million euros to widen the Titani and Limniadi tunnels.
