Free Museum Sunday on Lake Garda: Free Entry to Catullus’ Grottoes and Scaliger Castle on October 4

Scaliger Castle in Sirmione

The Free Museum Sunday on Lake Garda returns on October 4, 2026, with free admission to the territory’s main state archaeological and monumental sites. The ministerial initiative, scheduled for the first Sunday of every month, involves the historical complexes managed by the Direzione Musei Nazionali Lombardia on the southern shores of the lake.

Open Monumental and Archaeological Areas in Sirmione

In Sirmione, free access applies to two of the most visited complexes in the entire Garda basin: the archaeological area of Catullus’ Grottoes and the lake fortress of the Scaliger Castle.

At Catullus’ Grottoes, the route includes the remains of the grandiose Augustan-age residential villa, extending over about two hectares at the tip of the peninsula, and the National Archaeological Museum which houses architectural elements, mosaics, and remains of fresco and stucco decorations. At the Scaliger Castle, visitors can access the internal courtyard, walk along the medieval curtain walls, and explore the exceptional fourteenth-century fortified dock, a testament to Scaliger military engineering.

In Sirmione, the Coppa Franco Mazzotti is also scheduled for October 3 and 4, based in Piazzale Porto.

Roman Villa of Desenzano and Access Guidelines

Also as part of the state initiative, the Roman Villa and Antiquarium of Desenzano del Garda opens its doors to the public free of charge on the Brescia lakefront. It is known for its vast complex of polychrome mosaic floors dating back to the 4th century AD, depicting hunting and grape harvesting scenes.

Visits take place according to the usual holiday opening hours of the individual institutions. Where required, booking is recommended or mandatory. Information and tickets are available on the Musei Italiani app.
