Castiglione delle Stiviere is set to unveil a new historical and cultural itinerary, the “Path of the Hospitals,” which retraces the crucial sites where, in June 1859, a humanitarian experience of exceptional significance took shape. This initiative, strongly supported by the local administration, aims to enhance the city’s historical heritage, highlighting its fundamental role during and after the Battle of Solferino and San Martino, a decisive conflict for the Unification of Italy and a catalyst for the founding of the International Red Cross. This “hospital citadel,” as it was defined by Henry Dunant, became the focal point of a collective effort of care and solidarity.

**The “Hospital Citadel” in 1859**

The day after the Battle of Solferino and San Martino, Henry Dunant, unable to continue his journey, found himself immersed in the drama of thousands of wounded in Castiglione delle Stiviere. Here, he witnessed the extraordinary spirit of humanity displayed by the local population. As early as June 25, 1859, under the guidance of Rector Don Lorenzo Barziza, a health commission was formed. This commission organized twelve temporary hospitals in churches, palaces, and private homes, managing to accommodate around 7,000 wounded within a few days. It was in these streets, marked by pain and compassion, that the idea began to germinate, destined to evolve into the largest global humanitarian movement.

**A Journey Through Memory and Recognition**

Mayor Volpi emphasized that the “Path of the Hospitals” is not only a journey through the territory’s memory but also a tribute to the women who, with exceptional spirit of sacrifice and without distinction of nationality, aided thousands of wounded. The itinerary will be officially inaugurated on Saturday, June 21, at 9:00 AM, with a gathering at the Red Cross Museum. After greetings from local authorities, participants will be able to follow a guided tour that will visit the five main rescue sites of the time. These locations will be marked by explanatory panels and enriched with multimedia content that will reconstruct their history.

**Timeless Values: The Legacy of the Red Cross**

Cultural Councillor Massimo Lucchetti emphasized that this initiative goes beyond a mere homage to Henry Dunant and Don Lorenzo Barziza. It represents an invitation to revisit history, to understand the difficulties, chaos, and moral greatness of those days. The path creates a connection between the past and the present, offering an opportunity to reflect on the origins of the fundamental values of the Red Cross: neutrality, humanity, impartiality, independence, voluntariness, unity, and universality. The involvement of the Municipality of Castiglione delle Stiviere in the Diffused Museum of the Risorgimento (MUDRI) further contributes to enhancing these historical sites.
