Alto Garda Traffic Decision Deadline Amid Project Divisions
Decisions on Alto Garda traffic management
The time has come for decisions regarding traffic in Alto Garda. Specifically, by today – as confirmed by Riva Vice Mayor Pietro Matteotti – a final response must be given to the Province, especially concerning the so-called Rovereto-Riva route and, in particular, the dilemma (short tunnel or long tunnel) that has long appeared to divide the main municipalities of Lower Sarca.
It is no coincidence that this evening, at 7:30 p.m., in Riva, at the Union headquarters, a meeting is scheduled between the business owners’ coordination, local administrators, the president of the provincial council Dellai, and technical experts. Likewise, it is no coincidence that yesterday evening there was an scheduled similar meeting (without Dellai) to seek a “common line”.
Diverging positions on the projects
Indeed, because no later than yesterday afternoon, Riva and Arco, based on statements from Vice Mayor Matteotti and Mayor Veronesi respectively, did not seem to be on the same page. Matteotti reiterates what he said a few weeks ago: “Regarding the long tunnel, we’ve changed our minds because we cannot allow the traffic problem to remain unresolved or for it to be postponed again and again, which would be dangerous.”
There is indeed a well-founded risk that, given the hesitation of the municipalities of Lower Sarca, the Province will shift funding elsewhere. And for the future of our connections, this would be the final blow.
Franco Gamba, representing business owners, instead, confirms opposition to the short tunnel. “Why not properly solve the problem, given that we have waited so many years? This is not about wasting time: quite the contrary, we, representing 3,800 companies in the area, are the first to push for a definitive solution. But we also need to find a technically sound alternative, and I believe this exists,” he said.
Opinions on the Province’s proposal
On the same wavelength, Mayor Veronesi of Arco also expressed “great doubts” about the project proposed by the Province. In recent days, Vice Mayor Prandi had sharply opposed what he called “unjustifiable impositions.”
It’s expected that tonight, Dellai – unless the meeting is canceled at the last minute – the officials of Alto Garda will provide a unified picture, more simply, a yes or no to certain proposals.
Will the Riva line prevail — “preferring the quicker solution that gets the job done now rather than leaving everything as it is for another twenty years” — or the Arco stance that advocates for the long tunnel without intermediaries?
