Archaeological Excavations in Sirmione: New Discoveries at the Grottoes of Catullus

Sirmione: the Grottoes of Catullus unveil new and ancient unknown treasures. After decades of inactivity, the Grottoes of Catullus have reopened the curtain on extraordinary discoveries that are rewriting the history of this archaeological site. The recently initiated excavation campaign has uncovered a portico with crystallized columns, fountains, mosaics, and a valuable vase. Among the most intriguing finds is a rolled lead sheet, which will undergo further studies to clarify its use. These new pieces of evidence contradict the notion that the promontory had already revealed all its secrets. The Roman villa, dating back to the first century B.C., covers a vast area and has been preserved from abandonment thanks to its acquisition by the State in the 1930s. Archaeologist Luisella Lupano emphasized the uniqueness of the current situation, with well-preserved remains and clues about the structure’s past continuing to emerge thanks to modern technologies like ground-penetrating radar. Hopes are now focused on future funding to make these treasures accessible to the public and to continue research in a site rich in history and mystery. Italian Version
