Arco Opposes Patom Quarry Expansion Over Environmental and Traffic Concerns

«As municipal administration, we will soon prepare and submit our evaluations and concerns to the Via (Environmental Impact Assessment Authority). But for my part, I can only reiterate all my opposition to this project». After the WWF, even Arco‘s environment councilor Fabrizio Miori has voiced dissent regarding the proposed expansion of the Patom quarry.

Environmental criticisms and concerns

«I want to clarify that I have nothing against the Scavi Chiarani company — Miori emphasizes — which is simply requesting what it is legitimately entitled to on paper. My appeal is directed elsewhere. I ask the Province to consider what kind of sustainable development it intends to pursue in this way. There is much talk about how the economy of the Alta Garda is driven by tourism, supported by environmental features that are, in some respects, unique, and then such excavations are permitted».

The surface area of the quarry, according to the project now under review by the Via (the provincial office for Environmental Impact Assessment), would increase by about four times, while the extraction capacity would more or less double.

Impact on landscape and traffic

«Beyond the landscape impact — continues the councilor — we must not forget that nearby is the famous cave of the “Bus del Diaol”, which is of significant speleological and environmental importance. But what concerns me most are the consequences on traffic. The expansion of the quarry would mean a exponential increase in trucks departing from Moletta and crossing the valley towards the Grazie cement plant. All this must be taken into consideration, especially now that a bypass is being discussed.

However, I am not saying that the future north-ring road connection of Arco should be designed considering these needs, but rather that it is better to pause and reflect before granting authorization for such a large expansion. And thus, find an appropriate solution».

Historical considerations and future prospects

«If forty years ago — concludes Miori — the presence of heavy industries in the Basso Sarca made sense, now we need to carefully reconsider this. Perhaps think about their future reconversion, including job creation and specialized training. Unless, like perfect hypocrites, we talk about sustainable development and instead…»
