Starting from October 1, 2025, the cities of Lombardy are preparing to implement a significant driving ban for Euro 5 vehicles, restricting access for diesel cars registered between 2011 and 2015. This restriction will affect municipalities with over 30,000 residents during weekdays, specifically from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. The initial limitations will apply solely to cars (category M1), but an extension to commercial vehicles and heavy-duty trucks is anticipated in the following period, between 2026 and 2027. Those who fail to comply with these new regulations risk fines ranging from €163 to €679, with the possibility of license suspension in the case of repeated violations.
In response to these measures, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, has expressed his intention to introduce an amendment to prevent the immediate ban on Euro 5 vehicles, proposing alternative solutions to improve air quality without penalizing families and businesses. Regional presidents Attilio Fontana, Luca Zaia, and Alberto Cirio have supported this initiative, emphasizing the need for an extension of the ban to avoid inconveniencing millions of citizens while seeking a more balanced solution to environmental issues.
