Brescia: Bruce Gilden Exhibition Opens at Museo di Santa Giulia

A Brescia, at the Museo di Santa Giulia, the exhibition **“Bruce Gilden. A Closer Look”** runs until **23 August** as part of the summer programme of the city’s museums. The display is being highlighted alongside August discounts, including **free entry for people born in or resident in the province of Brescia** and a **reduced ticket price of €5 on weekdays**. The show is part of the **Fondazione Brescia Musei** project dedicated to contemporary photographers from the United States and presents a broad selection of images focused on Gilden’s direct, unfiltered approach.

The exhibition includes **80 photographs** tracing different stages of Gilden’s research, from black-and-white work in **New York, Haiti and Japan**—where he also photographed figures linked to the **Yakuza**—to European stops in **France, Ireland and the UK**. The itinerary culminates in the **“Faces”** series, developed between **2013 and 2024**. The images are shot using flash and with close proximity to subjects, often portraying people encountered in public spaces, including those facing social vulnerability; the result is a high-contrast visual narrative presented without filters. The presentation text also features the artist’s reported outburst in English, **“I’m angry!!”**.

The installation is completed by **two films**: one produced by **Magnum Photos**, the agency for which Gilden works, and another built as a biographical interview with British photographer and reporter **Martin Parr**, recently deceased. The exhibition was conceived by **Bruce Gilden** and curated by **Denis Curti**, with support from **Andréa Holzherr**, Magnum Photos’ Global Cultural Director. A catalogue published by **Skira** accompanies the show, while in spring the museum circuit also hosted the site-specific installation **“Grazia/Grace”** at the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, which entered the permanent collection of Brescia’s civic museums on **12 July**.
