A thwarted attempted assault on the Mondialpol vault in Calcinato was prevented in March 2022, thanks to the intervention of law enforcement. In this operation, a commando of 31 individuals was prepared to carry out a paramilitary heist using military-grade weapons and escape vehicles, but they were stopped before they could act. Among the main architects of the plan was Tommaso Morra, 41 years old, who was captured after becoming a fugitive. Sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison, Morra had been untraceable since last February, with over nine years of his sentence still remaining.
His fugitive status was interrupted thanks to a joint operation by the Central Operational Service of the State Police and the Mobile Squads of Brescia and Foggia, who collaborated with the Special Investigative Unit and the Economic and Financial Police of the Guardia di Finanza. Morra was located and arrested in Cerignola, his place of origin and operational hub for gangs specializing in armored car robberies. During previous investigations, he had emerged as a key figure in the armed group planning the assault on the vault, equipped with heavy weapons and vehicles ready for the attack.
