Valeggio sul Mincio, Tragedy in Canoeing: Tourist Swept Away by Current Drowns
On the afternoon of Ferragosto, a serious incident occurred in Borghetto, a district of Valeggio sul Mincio, where a tourist in his sixties lost his life while paddling in a canoe. The alert was raised around 3:30 PM when a passerby witnessed the capsizing of the boat in the stretch between the Mincio River and the Virgilio Canal, known for its treacherous currents. It remains unclear whether the man deliberately chose that route or if he was pushed towards it by a miscalculation. The force of the water pulled him into the artificial canal, making any attempt to resurface impossible.
Immediately, the fire brigades from Verona and Mantova, along with medical personnel from Suem 118, responded, supported by a medical helicopter. The search focused on the area where the man was last seen; ultimately, thanks to the helicopter, his body was located and recovered using a winch. Unfortunately, all attempts at resuscitation proved futile as the man had already passed away by the time he was retrieved. The carabinieri arrived at the scene to investigate the dynamics of the incident and clarify the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
