The renovation works for Piazza Corlo in Lonato del Garda will commence on Monday, August 18, 2025. This long-awaited project will initially focus on the northern section of the square, on the Brescia side. The first phase is expected to last approximately two months. The start of these works, awarded in March 2023, was postponed due to various factors, including the closure of the San Zeno Gallery and the Regional Fair. The decision to proceed with the interventions was made after discussions with the District Councillors and the Merchants’ Association, held on June 17, to address modifications to the traffic flow and ensure the safety of the construction site.

Details of Phase 1 of the Construction

The initial phase of the renovation project will concentrate on the northern portion of Piazza Corlo. This area will see the resurfacing of approximately 648 square meters and the replacement of the existing roundabout around the two central columns with a new circular flowerbed, measuring 3.80 meters in diameter, at the center of which a large tree will be planted.

The decision to schedule the start of works for mid-August was influenced by the need to carefully assess access to the Corlo parking area, considering safety challenges for workers and vehicles passing near the construction site. Additionally, the summer programming of events and activities organized by the Municipality and the Ugo da Como Foundation in June and July contributed to this timing. Furthermore, a preparatory intervention to renovate the aqueduct on Via E. Accordini (at the intersection with Via Regia Antica) is planned for July and is necessary before the opening of the construction site in Piazza Corlo.

Traffic and Parking Modifications

To ensure safety during the works, there will be significant modifications to the traffic in the area of Piazza Corlo. The northern section of the square, where the works will take place, will be completely closed to vehicular traffic, while pedestrian access will always be maintained. The stretch connecting Via Regia Antica to Piazza Corlo will be accessible in both directions only for residents, as will Via Trento and Via Trieste.

Access to the parking lot on Via dei Fanti from Piazza Corlo will be prohibited. Only residents will be able to reach it from Via Sant’Antonio, proceeding towards Via dei Fanti (along the upper side of the cemetery), and exiting from Via dei Fanti towards Vicolo Tomasi. To ensure safe passage, the road will be appropriately graveled until access to the parking area from Piazza Corlo is reopened. For those coming from Via Repubblica (Post Office area), access to the portion of the square not affected by the works will be allowed, with a left turn onto Via Sorattino. The parking spaces in front of the Church will maintain a one-hour parking limit, as will those in the “fontanone” parking area (near Vicolo Cappuccine via Sorattino). The possibility of partially reopening the parking lot on Via dei Fanti during the construction will be evaluated based on the progress of the works. Once phase 1 is completed, traffic will be fully restored, and access to the parking area on Via dei Fanti will be available again.

Timeline of the Interventions

The entire renovation project has been divided into two distinct phases. Phase 1, which involves the demolition and reconstruction of the asphalt pavement in the “Brescia side” section of the square, has an estimated construction duration of 40-60 days. Phase 2, which will involve the demolition and reconstruction of the stone pavement in the “Verona side” section, is expected to last 60-80 days. This latter phase cannot begin before the August/September period to ensure the proper installation and durability of the load-bearing stone material.
