A disturbing incident of grave desecration occurred on Wednesday, March 12, at the Soiano Cemetery, where the tomb of Frida Braidic, matriarch of a prominent Romani family, was violated for the second time. The perpetrators took advantage of the cemetery’s closure for exhumation operations, gaining access during the night and breaking into the deceased’s niche. Although there were suspicions of theft related to alleged jewelry, nothing was stolen as the coffin contained no valuable items. The incident was reported to the carabinieri officers from the Manerba station, who responded to the scene alongside Mayor Alessandro Spaggiari.
Investigations are ongoing, and the mayor emphasized that similar incidents are not uncommon in the cemeteries of the province. It is believed that the desecrators may have been searching for gold or valuables, but the possibility of an act of defacement related to a family feud cannot be ruled out. Recently, new cameras were installed in the cemetery to monitor potential acts of vandalism and assist in the investigations. Frida Braidic’s tomb had previously been desecrated in a similar manner; she passed away in 2009 at the age of 74, and her funeral attracted a large crowd.
