The ASST del Garda has recently introduced an innovative care pathway at the Desenzano Hospital aimed at producing and using autologous serum eye drops to treat ocular conditions. This initiative was developed by the Immunoematology and Transfusion Medicine Service (SIMT) with the goal of offering new therapeutic solutions for conditions such as dry eye syndrome and corneal injuries.
Paolo Prandini, Director of SIMT, explained that autologous serum eye drops are a particularly effective non-transfusional blood component in promoting eye regenerative processes. This type of treatment requires an initial ophthalmic visit at the ASST del Garda clinics, followed by evaluation by the SIMT physician to determine eligibility for the procedure.
The production process for the eye drops begins with the collection of venous blood from the patient. The blood is then processed under sterile conditions using specifically authorized medical devices for this purpose. The final product is divided into single-use vials, ensuring maximum safety and sterility.
At the time of delivery, patients are provided with an appropriate container that includes personal and blood component data. Each package contains thirty microvials, sufficient for one month of home therapy or as per ophthalmic instructions. In addition, a detailed guide on the correct methods of storage and administration of the eye drops is provided.
Vincenzo Pucci, Director of the Ophthalmology Department in Desenzano del Garda, emphasized how this new service significantly expands therapeutic opportunities for chronic and complex diseases such as recurrent corneal abrasions, lacrimal deficits associated with Sjogren’s syndrome, and chronic ulcers resulting from infections or corneal caustic injuries. “Positive results are already well-documented in the scientific literature,” added Pucci.
The service will initially be activated starting from June 10th at the Desenzano hospital. Pietro Imbrogno, Health Director of ASST Garda, announced that the intention is to rapidly extend this therapeutic opportunity to all ASST Garda facilities.
