Desenzano Road Projects Boost Traffic Flow and Infrastructure Upgrades
SIXTEEN BILLION FOR DESENZANO’S ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC FLOW. The main construction site is operated by the company Serenissima: here, work is underway to improve the highway exit and the intersection with the Castiglione-Desenzano state road. A bridge will also be built to surpass the roundabout in the Perla locality.
The Municipality will repair, at the expense of two billion, via Unità d’Italia in San Martino, followed by via Murachette and via Gherla. These roads, both state and local, are narrow and not suited to modern needs.
According to a statistic conducted a few years ago by the Polizia stradale (Highway Police), Desenzano is crossed daily by as many as 1,000 trucks. Additionally, there is traffic onto municipal roads from the Serenissima highway toll booths: overall, between Desenzano, San Martino, and Peschiera, nearly five million vehicles exit through these three tolls each year.
There is also local traffic and commuter flow related to tourism and weekend nights. Significant progress in traffic management has been made with the opening of the bypass road costing 40 billion, though it has unfortunately stalled among the vineyards of Lugana in Rovizza di Sirmione.
However, other construction sites are ongoing. The most important concerns the roundabout at Perla, where traffic from Brescia, Castiglione del Mantovano, and from the Serenissima highway exit converges, right in the center of Desenzano and also from Sirmione and the Veronese area.
Projects to Improve Traffic Flow
To facilitate the smooth flow of vehicles during weekends, Serenissima has designed a project and initiated works. On one side, it involves modifying the connection where vehicles exit the highway onto the state road.
A roundabout will be constructed here, along with an overpass. The state road will then continue with an elevated structure, a proper bridge to pass over the roundabout in front of the Standa supermarket, connecting to the existing state road on the Desenzano side.
The investment is estimated at around 10 billion, but there are concerns that the long-standing works could cause further queues and slowdowns during the summer months.
“That’s a concern I also have,” confirms Mayor Felice Anelli. “That’s why I asked for quick action and to restore the two lanes leading to the roundabout at least for the summer. I also explicitly requested that the construction site be closed at least for the entire month of August.”
Interventions on Municipal Roads
But Desenzano, through its own budget and the use of loans, is tackling other projects. First, via Unità d’Italia, which connects Rivoltella to San Martino della Battaglia, will be repaired. The tender for the contract amounts to 1.5 billion, with 200 companies participating.
The Municipality plans to spend two billion in Rivoltella to overcome the railway barrier. The underpasses are too narrow, and solutions such as widening or alternative measures will be necessary.
The Municipality will also intervene shortly to repair via Murachette and via Gherla.
