Riva del Garda: Fake police officer at the door of an elderly couple, scam thwarted A scam attempt against an elderly couple residing in Riva del Garda was promptly stopped thanks to the vigilance of the victim and the intervention of a neighbor. The incident began when a man, posing as a fake police officer, approached the couple’s home, claiming that their son had been arrested after hitting a child and requesting money to secure his release. After receiving this shocking news, the husband contacted his wife, but in the meantime, a second scammer called the woman trying to corroborate the deception.
The situation further escalated with a phone call from an alleged lawyer providing “unlock codes” to relay to the court. The woman, suspicious, sought help from a neighbor who, realizing the scam, spoke with the fake lawyer and contacted the couple’s real son to verify the information. Once it was confirmed that everything was in order, they reported the incident to the police. Law enforcement subsequently renewed their appeal for caution among older citizens, urging them never to hand over money or valuable items to strangers with urgent stories and to always contact the appropriate authorities in case of suspicion.
