Gardesana Landslides Disrupt Ferry Service and Traffic Near Limone
Optimists joke that one cherry leads to another. Skeptics, on the other hand, recall an even more unfortunate popular saying: “Misfortunes never come alone.” Thus, the situation on Gardesana, blocked (for a long period) north of Limone due to the Rocchetta landslide and cautiously open south of the town because of the Nanzel landslide, was compounded by a ferry accident connecting the Brescian town to Riva during the days of New Year’s Eve and New Year.
The inconveniences of the last day of 2000 also persisted yesterday, to the point that the ferry did not provide its usual and very useful service of transporting vehicles, which had been immediately guaranteed from Christmas Eve onward and was used from morning to evening.
When contacting the Navigarda ticket office, confirmation was received: transfers by ferry—yesterday—were only guaranteed for people, via the central harbor.
No guarantees—however—for the ferry, making it preferable to use the Toscolano Maderno dock. This was the situation over the past two days, but some difficulties could also occur today.
A few curious scenes were observed a few hours before the New Year’s Eve dinner, with passengers on some bus having to resort to motorboats to reach Limone, where they had reservations.
The repercussions of this unusual situation caused by the closure of Gardesana are also being felt in Riva del Garda, where car queues are creating some problems.
Urgent decisions have been taken to address the situation, including reducing parking fees in certain areas and using spaces provided by private individuals to accommodate vehicles, in order to alleviate traffic jams.
In recent days, waiting times for the ferry—when it operates normally—have ranged from 30 to 45 minutes. b.f.
