Gardesana Study on Colon Cancer Prevention Among Adults 45-55
The Gardesana association Studio e Prevenzione Tumori, led by Ambrogio Colombo, has initiated a study on the population of both sexes aged 45 to 55, aimed at preventing colon neoplasms.
The research, currently limited to Desenzano, is conducted in close collaboration with general practitioners. The examinations carried out are entirely free of charge. It is defined as a study rather than “screening,” because a large amount of data will be analyzed by a doctor to contribute significantly to prevention, alongside other institutions or organizations involved in prevention efforts.
«Obviously,» emphasizes Colombo, «all related costs are covered by the association.» Overall, 2,670 people have been involved, although only 516 individuals have participated in the study. This represents a scientific sample — statistically still reliable.
Results and Interventions of the Initiative
Among the individuals undergoing examinations, thirty cases tested positive (5.6%), and out of 21 colonoscopies performed, two cases of cancer were discovered, which were promptly operated on, thus avoiding further consequences. This highlights the importance of prevention.
As part of the same initiative, four scholarships were awarded to doctors of the Ospedale di Desenzano. Funds were allocated for the development of diagnostic techniques for tumors and for reconstructive surgery of the breast.
«Our association,» underscores Colombo, «also supported the home care service for terminal oncological patients by providing a Panda car and allocating two scholarships to medical and nursing staff for a training course at the Italian Palliative Care School in Varenna, the only one of its kind in Italy.»
Awareness Activities and Engagement
To promote a culture of prevention among the population, the association has organized various events, during which contributions were collected.
For the upcoming year, a series of meetings with the local community are already planned, featuring qualified medical professionals as speakers.
