A rare specimen of the Hermit Ibis, a protected endangered species, was found dead in Castel Goffredo. The alert was raised on Monday, December 21, by the Austrian environmental association “Waldtrappteam,” which is involved in the reintroduction of this species in Europe. The bird, monitored via a GPS device, had stopped for several hours between Ceresara and Castel Goffredo during its migration across the Po Valley.
The Carabinieri Forestali of Goito and Castiglione delle Stiviere intervened on December 23, locating the bird with the help of the Canine Unit from Lecco. The cause of death appears to have been electrocution after contact with a medium-voltage power line. The body of the Hermit Ibis was recovered and sent to the Zooprofilactic Laboratory in Mantova for further analysis, which currently rules out poaching as a possible cause of death.
