A new pilot project dedicated to supporting new mothers has been launched in Lombardy, aimed at providing home-based midwifery in the early days following childbirth. The initiative, approved by the regional government and commented on by Welfare Councillor Guido Bertolaso, seeks to ensure healthcare and emotional support for families, particularly in mountainous and peripheral areas. The presence of the midwife will not only assist in managing the health of the new mother and the newborn but will also help identify any physical or psychological difficulties, activating the necessary specialists.
The experimental phase of the project will last for 12 months and will involve several provinces in Lombardy, including Pavia, Como, Varese, and Milan, with a total funding of 500,000 euros. This intervention is part of the broader commitment of the Region to combat the decline in birth rates in Italy and represents a significant step towards more effective and coordinated continuity of midwifery care.
