Lombardy is preparing for a significant renewal of its railway fleet with the introduction of 214 new trains by 2025, thanks to an investment of 1.7 billion euros. This project aims to enhance sustainable mobility in the region, with a particular focus on hydrogen-powered trains, of which 3 have already been completed and another 11 are under construction. By June 30, 2026, it is expected that 7 hydrogen trains will be operational, thereby contributing to a greener public transport system.
The Transport Councillor, Franco Lucente, emphasized that the introduction of the new Caravaggio, Donizetti, and Colleoni models has already led to tangible improvements in terms of comfort and safety for users. With more spacious interiors and modern amenities such as Wi-Fi and enhanced air conditioning, the new trains are increasing passenger numbers while reducing energy consumption by up to 30%. Lombardy is thus continuing its journey towards more efficient and sustainable mobility, meeting the set goals for the future of regional transport.
