Increase of the tourist tax in Brescia: impacts on sustainable tourism
Recent statements from Assoturismo Confesercenti have sparked a heated debate over the proposal for a 30% increase in the tourist tax in the province of Brescia, as outlined in the economic maneuver’s accompanying legislation. According to the association, this increase could generate total revenue exceeding one billion euros, but it would undermine the competitiveness of the local tourism sector and further depress domestic demand. President Vittorio Messina emphasized that the tax was originally intended to fund investments in tourism and the enhancement of local areas, rather than becoming an additional burden on tourists. Barbara Quaresmini, president of Confesercenti Lombardia Orientale, pointed out that for Brescia, this increase would result in an annual tax burden of over 4 million euros. The recovery of domestic tourism remains fragile despite the positive outcomes of the summer season, which has been primarily driven by foreign visitors. In this context, industry operators warn that raising taxes on tourism not only risks stalling growth but also hinders the necessary investment in infrastructure and services needed to ensure sustainable and competitive tourism.
